  • As our society moves towards centering and honoring the voices of those impacted by ABA services,it is past time for a much-needed shift in the way clinicians approach working with neurodivergent learners. While obtaining informed consent has been always been at the forefront of an ethical approach to client services, a recent movement toward honoring client assent has emerged in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis among other treatment modalities. With many of our leanrers, gaining assent isn’t always straightforward and clear, but it is always possible with skilled clinicians and the right supports. As assent giving and withdrawal occur on an interaction-to-interaction basis, it requires an advanced analytic skill set from the Behavior Analyst or clinician. The ability to assess, plan for, and respond to client behavior and environmental conditions is crucial in successfully implementing an assent-based approach. This webinar will explore the need for a shift in perspective and practice as well as review the definitions of assent, assent withdrawal, and an assent based treatment Model and will highlight the critical features of an Assent based treatment approach.

  • 1. Participants will learn to identify assent and assent withdrawal in their learners

    2. Participants will learn to list 6 important components of assent based treatment

    3. Participants will learn to identify proactive strategies for promoting assent

4.Participants will learn to identify important measures to include in assent based treatment

  • This workshop will survey the current literature, and clinical lore, on ACT with parents (sometimes called acceptance and commitment training when working with parents and other carers). We will look at the benefits of psychoeducation for parents; teaching important aspects of child bio-psycho-social development as they relate to psychological inflexibility and subsequent behavior concerns. We will demonstrate techniques for helping parents identify unhelpful behavior patterns or “dances” between themselves and their child or adolescent. We will discuss engaging the parents as “co-clinicians” by giving them strategies for turning challenging situations into teaching and skill building opportunities in the important contexts of home and community. We will describe a three-stage ACT-based model that can help parents get unstuck from habitual and ineffective reactions, and to then orient toward pursuing valued family goals. We will describe the benefits of helping parents notice their own private events in challenging situations and to then engage the ACT processes themselves (parent as “co-client”).

  • Participants will learn:

    • The benefits of, and techniques for, teaching parents important aspects of child bio-psycho-social development as they relate to psychological inflexibility and subsequent behavior concerns.

    • To engage parents as Co-Clinicians: helping parents teach and encourage the child or adolescent’s use of the six core ACT processes in the contexts of home and community.

    • To engage parents as Co-Clients; helping parents use the six core ACT processes to increase their own psychological flexibility, and parenting effectiveness, in challenging situations.

    • A three-stage ACT-based model for helping parents increase context sensitivity, get unstuck from habitual and ineffective reactions, and then orient toward valued goals.

  • Most behavior analysts have hit walls with clients, their parents, or their wrap-around services. While typical three- or four- term contingencies can get us far, they tend to stumble when pliance, coherence, and other private events get involved. This workshop is designed to expand your current understanding of behavior intervention and to enhance your conceptualizations with greater depth and scope. I've worked with middle schoolers and high schoolers where seemingly no external reinforcer or threat (even prison!) had much influence on behavior change. To work with these suffering, stuck kids, our team had to start engaging in parallel process with the students, to give up the struggle, and to start intervening on deeper, more meaningful levels. RFT helps us do this.

  • Learning Objective 1: Learners will gain a broad understanding of Relational Frame Theory key concepts.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will learn how Relational Frame Theory can be applied to more traditional behavior analytic contexts.

  • From Dr. Kirsten:

My behavior analytic work/applied-RFT work is centered on compassion, kindness, joy, and ‘do no harm’. From this perspective, I will share why I'm passionate about RFT-based interventions to train functional and meaningful language to children. I’ll discuss my work with SMART, provide examples of using RFT-based interventions in applied settings, share video examples, show outcome data, and discuss the social validity of transforming language.

  • 1.Review derived relational responding as operant behavior – it can be trained!

    2. Discuss the functional utility of RFT-based assessment and training – from SMART to applied-RFT in 1:1 settings.

    3. Discuss what comprises an RFT-based language training curriculum.

    4. Discuss the social validity of ‘speaking with meaning and listening with understanding.'
